TEA CULTURAL TRANK ; AMERICAN PRODUCTS SOLD IN JAPAN
Level: Beginner
Goals : learn KATAKANA usage by reading authentic materials
learn about the close tie between the US and Japan
Standard : 1-2 You can expand this activity into 2-2.
Materials : The trunk, brown paper grocery sacks or boxes, chalk board
Time : 1 class hour
ACTIVITY
Preparations : Devide the contents of the trunk into the number of the
group you'll have in class. Put them in sacks or boxes.
procedure : 1. Devide your class into small groups of 3 - 5 students.
2. Tell the class "Let's have a group competition of guessing the
meanings
of KATAKANA wards which you'll find on the cans, boxes or wrappers.
If you
show cans and boxes to the other groups, they can guess the word easier,
so
try not to show nor say the word loud."
3. Distribute one grocery sack or box to each group. Let students explore
the content, have fun. Have them pick up 2 words for individual student,
and write them on their notebooks.
4. Send one student from each group to the chalk board and have them
write
one KATAKANA word they have chosen. Teacher make corrections of spelling
if
necessary. (The writings appear on those merchandise have a tendency
of
being decorative, and sometime they are difficult for the beginning
level
students.)
5. Pick one word at a time, have students of other groups(challenged
groups)
guess the meaning. If the answer is correct, a challenged group gets
one
point. If no one can guess, let the student who chosed the word show
the
merchandise to the class to give the second chance of guessing. If the
answer is correct, both the challenged and the challenging group get
1/2
point each. If still no one can guess, the challenging group wins 2
point.
In any case, have the class see the merchandises on which KATAKANA words
appear before you move to the next word..
6. Repeat the same for the other words on the board. When time allows,
do
the same for the second words the students have chosen.
7. At the end, count the point of each group.

INTRODUCTION OF SUPERATIVES AND COMPARATIVES
Level : Whenever before you introduce Superatives and Comparatives
Goal : Conceptualization of the grammar
Standard : 1-1
Materials : xerox paper, black magic markaers,colored paper (if you
like)
Time : One class houre for each activity
ACTIVITY I : Introduction of statement
Prepararion : NONE
Procedure : 1. Distrubute 4 sheets of xerox paper and a magic marker
to
each student.
2. Ask students to fold paper into half and write fake & exaggerated
heights,weight, eye-sight and IQ on each half sheet, in large size letter.
3. Have students make a circle or a semi-circle.
4. Introduce 4 nouns, SHINCHOU, TAIJYUU, SHIRYOKU, and IQ, and practice
saying them.
5. Intruduce 8 adjectives, SEGA TAKAI/ HIKUI, OMOI/KARUI, MEGE II/WARUI,
and
ATAMAGA II/WARUI, and practice saying them.
6. Teacher says, "Show your height to the class, please.",
and students
display their numbers. Then teacher introduces "**SANGA ICHIBAN
SEGA
TAKAIDESU",and students repeat it. Teacher also introduces "##SANGA
ICHIBAN
SEGA HIKUIDESU", and students repeat it.
7. Repeat the same for the rest, weight, eye=sight and IQ.
8. If time allows, do the same by picking random 3 or more students
to
display their numbers.
9. Homework assignments : 1. Give colored paper to students
saying,"Tomorrow,we'll practice the same expressions, so create
someone or
something with those four features, give a name, and bring it to the
class.
If you want to change the numbers to fit to your new creature, you may
do
so."
10. Homework assignment: 2. Prepare short introduction speech of your
creature.
ACTIVITY II : Introduction of question
Preparation : NONE for teacher : Seating by circle or semi-circle
Procedure : 1. Have each student introduce new creature by giving
prepared speech. At the end, class practice names of new creatures.
2. Review the first day's expression using the new names and numbers
for
all 8 adjective phrases.
3. Introduce the question format "DAREGA ICHIBAN (A)DESUKA ?"
followed by
teacher saying the aanswer to it.
4. Check students' understanding of the question format by asking questions
and solicit answers using the rest of the adjectives
5. Practice question format.
6. Have two volunteers demonstrate question and answer, repeat the same
till you run out of all volunteers.
7. Introduce two expressions ; 1. KURASUDE, 2. A-san TO B-san TO C-san
TODEWA, and practice both phrases in the context
8. Homework assignment : Using the newly learned expressions AND
previousknowledge of adjectives, write 2 statements and 2 sets of question
and answer. The homeworks will be shared in class next day.
NOTE : I expanded the superative activities into comparatives right
after
the superatives test. Using the same materials seems helpful for their
understanding.

LEARNING LEFT AND RIGHT WITH FACE VOCABULARY
Level : Beginning
Goal : Familiarizing the target vocabulary and have FUN
Standard : 1-2
Materials : Regular size xerox paper and 2 x 2 white paper, paste or
scotch
tape
Students'knowledge of vocabulary (left, right, face, hair, eye,
nose, eyer and mouth
Time : 5 minuts
ACTIVITY
Preparation : Write left eye, mouth,etc. on each 2 x 2 paper, and face
and hair on larger paper for the number of set your class needs. Each
set
must have complete parts of a face.
Procedure : 1. Devide class into groups of 7 students (ideally). If
it is not possible, one student do two assignments.
2. Decide group leaders, and give the larger paper.
3. Distribute 2x2 paper to the rest of the students.
4. Give class 2 minuts to draw assigned part on the given paper.
5. Group leader call for the parts in Japanese one at a time, and paste
them on the face sheet
6. When all the parts are pasted, group members sign on their "collective
masterpiece".
7. Share the works with other groups.
NOTE : You can expand this into "comment or opinin session".

BODY PARTS FUKUWARAI
Level : Beginning
Goal : Familiarizing the target vocabulary and have FUN
Standard : 1-2
Materials : Separately made head, torso, arms and legs with magnet pasted
on
the bakc side ; a bandana, chalk board
Time : 3 minuts
ACTIVITY
Preparation : NONE
Procedure : 1. Have 2 volunteers come to the chalk board.
2. One volunteer do blind-fold with bandana.
3. Another volunteer hand one part of body at a time to the blind-folded
student by saying the name and left or right in Japanese.
4. Blind-folded student locates each part on the chalk board while the
audience helping by saying "SUKOSHI MIGI" or "MOTTO SHITA",
etc..

LEARNING DIRECTION WORDS & RELATED ADVERBS
Level : Beginning
Goal : Practice listning the vecabulaty
Standard : 1-1
Material : 1/4" grid paper for each student
Time : 3 minuts
ACTIVITY
Preparation : NONE
Procedure :
1. Have agreement with class to draw line according to the
directions given, one grid for"SUKOSHI", 2 grids for no adverb,
3 grids for
"ZUTTO".
2. Teacher gives commands while drawing on her grid paper.
3. After 10 - 15 commands, check the result.
4. Repeat if desired.
5. Let a student volunteer give commands.
