Activity 1 : Shopping

Theme: Katakana & Hiragana
Level: Japanese 1
Goal: Recognize katakana & hiragana's reading and meaning
Format: Group 3-5
What you need: Japanese Grocery items such as candy, ramen, gum, etc that is written in Katakana & hiragana.
(I normally purchased those items from Oriental market)

We call this activity "Kaimono、 かいもの" going shopping. Each group has a list of shopping ( written in both katakana and hiragana) from their teacher. All of the items are placed on a table for display as if in a store. The store should have all the items that on the list, but you can create non items on the list also. Then the student who is playing the role of the store clerk can practice responding to the customer by saying " I'm sorry we do not carry this item "

Activity 2 : Reading (Back to 1年生)

Theme: Reading
Level: Japanese 2
Goal: Read Japanese first grade book smoothly. and recognize particles.
Format: Whole class
What you need: Real Japanese text book.

For Japanese 2 class, I make a copy from first grade text book and let students read theme out loud before the class begins.
While the student is reading the story, I will ask how many particle were in a particular sentence.
Also, I use many 絵本 "むかしむかし話"that I purchased at 100円 store.
