Activity 1: かたかなえいご(LOANWORD)

This activity provides students to learn wasei-eigo or katakana-eigo. Loan (borrowed) words, or "made-in-Japan English" words are confusing for students of Japanese because foreign words are often misinterpreted and used differently in Japanese. Students might enjoy learning loanwords and realize influence of English on Japanese language. This lesson has two targets; therefore a teacher can choose to conduct a whole lesson or to teach one of the targets.

1) Theme: CULTURE (Reflection of foreign languages)

2) Grammar:
  a) Reading and Writing loanwords with KATAKANA
b) "X"は日本語で何ですか? (How do you say "X" in Japanese?)

3) Activity:

a) LOANWORDS: Show students a few object of loan words (e.g., a mechanical pencil, stapler, maker). Ask students if they know the name of objests in Japanese. Introduce loanwords using realias and picture cards (See Appendix A). Give each student (or a pair) a card with Katakana. Let them read Katakana and match pictures/realias with the words. Correct and practice pronunciation during the matching activity.
LOAN WORDS (Appendix A)
シャーペン、オートバイ(バイク)、レンジ、ワンピース、フライドポテト、シュークリーム、
ハンドル、ホッチキス、コップ、リュックサック、ワイシャツ、パン

b) "HOW DO YOU SAY "X" IN JAPANESE?"-----Role playing: Flea Market
To set up the situation for the role playing activity, the teacher tells students that they are in Japan and need to buy an item (e.g. a stapler, a mechanical pencil). Put all the realias and pictures on the desk. Before the role playing, review the sentence "Xは日本語で何ですか?" ("How do you say "X" in Japanese?"). To practice a dialogue, half of the class first act as a shopper and the rests act as a seller, and change the role. The model dialogue is as follows;

   Seller: IRASSHAIMASE. Welcome
Shopper: SUMIMASEN, ARE (O) MISETE KUDASAI (pointing an item)
Excuse me, please show me that.
Seller: KORE DESU KA? Is it this one?
Shopper: HAI, SORE DESU. SORE WA NIHONGO DE NAN DESU KA?
Yes, it is the one. How do you say it in Japanese?
Seller: KORE DESU KA? ______________________DESU. DOOZO.
This? It is ______________________. Here you go.
   Shopper: ARIGATOO/ DOOMO. Thank you.

Activity 2: WORLD FACT QUIZ

Activity 2: WORLD FACT QUIZ
This activity can be best used as a review of the Comparative and Superlative. Students learn geographic and historical facts (e.g. comparing sizes of two countries, the highest building in the world, etc) while practicing the forms. Using a game show style with small prizes, students get excited to compete with other teams!

1) Theme: Miscellaneous

2) Grammar: Adjectives (Comparative and Superlative)

3) Activity:
Pair up students with two or three in one group. Make a "quiz show setting," if possible. If not, let the students stand by the wall. In the center of the classroom, put a ball or an object. A teacher reads the questions, and a student who first grab the ball (or object) can answer the question. When answering the questions, a student has to make a complete sentence using the comparative or superlative. If the student could not make a complete sentence in Japanese, the pair can't get a point.
EXAMPLE: イタリアと日本、どちらのほうが大きいですか?
  世界の中で、一番長い川は?

4)Useful Website:
